NGENDAG

(2014), two-channel video projection, 12 mins.

Ngendag marks the passing of an important generation for the artist’s family, where her grandparents, great uncles and great aunt were all cremated together according to Balinese-Hindu rites. The Ngendag ceremony, which means “to rise up”, involves an intimate pre ritual with immediate family members before the final crematory ceremony. For many families in Bali, the final cremation is often delayed and the deceased is temporarily buried until other relatives can join them. During the video we witness the bones of artist’s family being dug up in the pre dawn light and as the day breaks, being washed, wrapped and prepared for their final cremation.
